Engeland, 1995. De hooligancultuur viert hoogtij, raves en pillen zijn er dagelijkse kost. Maar de drugsdood van een 18-jarig meisje ontketent een kettingreactie die zal leiden tot de ontmanteling van een van de meest beruchte misdaadorganisaties uit de Britse geschiedenis. Na dit trieste hoogtepunt van een onstuitbare misdaadgolf heeft hoofdinspecteur Phil Stone nog slechts één doel voor ogen: de zogenaamde 'Essex Boys' voorgoed de bak in. Maar Pat Tate, Tony Tucker en Craig Rolfe zijn psychopaten die zichzelf onaantastbaar wanen en tot het uiterste gaan om hun waar aan de man te brengen. Dan heeft Stone een meevaller. Iemand van de organisatie is bereid om als infiltrant op te treden. Maar intussen hebben de Essex Boys niet alleen vijanden gemaakt bij de politie... Deze grauwe en bikkelharde gangsterfilm is gebaseerd op ware gebeurtenissen en schildert een ontluisterend portret van de Britse onderwereld.

Wanneer een kruidenier ingrijpt bij een brute straatroof veroorzaakt hij per ongeluk de dood van een jonge overvaller. De volgende dag krijgen ze bezoek van de rest van de bende en betalen hij en zijn vrouw op gruwelijke wijze de tol.

Maar terwijl de media snoepen van deze burgerwacht en zijn bloedwraak, heeft Jimmy één aspect niet onder controle: de veiligheid van zijn geliefde...

• Britflicks.com: The plot and action rattle along with a few reversals of expectations along the way to keep you guessing. Danny Dyer is convincing as the hero. In some senses he's part Stallone's Rambo and part Liam Neeson's Bryan Mills (Taken).

There is tension and trauma bubbling under the cool dangerous exterior with Dyers stone killer only giving glimpses of his former self with darkly comical wisecracks before dispatching the next victim in a more violent and inventive way than the last.
• HeYuGuys.co.uk: With propulsive storytelling from Reynolds and a reined-in, powerful Dyer in the form of his life, Vendetta's a simplistic yet gripping movie.
